Description: The State Legislature passed legislation in 1870 which awarded pensions to surviving members of the First Regiment of New York Volunteers who fought in the Mexican War. The original act was amended and further money was appropriated in 1874, 1875, and 1878. This series contains letters, affidavits, and other supporting documentation submitted to the state comptroller by veterans or their legal representatives in order to verify military service and apply for pension funds. These documents contain detailed military service information including the claimant's rank, his company, the battles in which he was engaged, and any wounds he received.
