Columns of Piazzetta, Venice, Italy, 1924

Historical Context
The Piazzetta dei Leoncini is part of St. Mark's Square, or Piazza San Marco, in Venice.

The two tall columns represent Venice's two patron saints.  Atop the column on the left, St. Theodore (Teodoro), is stepping on a crocodile.  The winged lion of St. Mark the Evangelist (Marco) stands on the column to the right.
