Historical Context
During the First World War, the American shipping industry was of vital importance.  In addition to carrying soldiers overseas, ships were also utilized to transport supplies and munitions to keep soldiers and support units fully equipped.

This letter was written by a man inquiring about employment at the shipbuilding plant mentioned in the clipping attached to the upper left corner of the letter.
