Dominican poet and writer Pedro Mir (1913-2000) began publishing poetry in Dominican newspapers in the 1930s. In 1984, Mir was named Poet Laureate of the Dominican Republic by the Dominican Congress, awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Hunter College (CUNY), and in 1993 was awarded the Dominican National Literature Award for lifetime achievement.
