China - Plowing Rice Field

Three farmers wearing conical hats use plows pulled by cattle in a rice field near Hong Kong. Mud borders of the paddy fields are visible, and a building and looming mountains can be seen in the background. Rice is a staple food of much of Asia, including China, but it takes a great deal of labor to grow. Rice plants are first grown in small plots, and then are transplanted, usually by hand, to paddies, artificial ponds constructed specifically to hold the rice plants. The paddies provide the rice with water, and also help to discourage the growth of weeds. When the rice is nearly ready for harvest, the paddies are drained and the rice is picked, (1924).
