China - Mother and Three Children

A mother and three children in Shantung Province, China, are gathering stubble for fuel. Rakes and baskets are being held as tools for the job. All four are wearing padded clothing to protect against cold weather. Farmers in Shantung province usually grew wheat, soybeans, sweet potatoes, millet, and barley, and also produced straw for craftmaking. After a harvest, the crop stubble would be gathered up and used for fuel. This practice was common in many agricultural countries, (1919).
