Les Hopitaux, France

A village oven in Les Hopitaux, France, where all the baking of the community is done. The oven is a structure made out of stone and bricks with a large opening in the front. A large wooden structure, perhaps a house, has been built over the oven. Piles of sticks are visible on both sides of the dirt road leading up to the oven. A woman is standing in the middle foreground, at what appears to be a well. Many villages in France made use of communal ovens to bake all of the community’s bread, (1906).
