The Theater of Dionysus in Athens, Greece, seen from the upper range of the lower section of seats. There is space for an orchestra below the main stage, and a few rows of seats of honor. Steps lead to the stage through the theater seating. Crumbling sculptures are visible. In the background is Philopappus Hill. The Theatre was dedicated to the god Dionysus, god of wine and theatre. Each year the Athenians held the Dionysia celebration in the theatre. In this festival, tragedies and comedies were performed in front of the Athenian audience.
