India - State Elephants with Rich Trappings

State elephants with rich trappings in a pageant in honor of the visit of King George V of England and Queen Mary to Calcutta (Kolkata), Bengal, India. Several Indian elephants, at least two with long tusks, are dressed with necklaces, headdresses, and blankets. Some are carrying riders and others are supporting elaborate howdahs, or seats with canopies. At left, several men wearing ceremonial dress and turbans are holding long poles, (1912).
