Ceylon - Farm Elephant

A farm elephant carries home a farmer and his plow near Kandy, Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The elephant is standing in a field, with trees and a forest, as well as a farmhouse, visible in the background. The Asian elephant is highly intelligent, and so has been domesticated and used by humans for farming and logging for centuries. Elephants also play important roles in Asian religions, and are an integral element of Sri Lankan festivals such as the perahera processions. The conversion to mechanical farm equipment eventually led to a decline in the number of domesticated elephants in Sri Lanka, (1912).
