The New Memorial Pagoda adjacent to New Sun Yat-Sen Mausoleum in Nanking (Nanjing), China. Three sides of the pagoda, and three doorways, are visible from this view. The walkway leading to the nine story pagoda is surrounded on both sides by trees. Also known as Linggu Pagoda, the New Memorial Pagoda was built in 1929 by Chiang Kai-Shek as a memorial to the 33,000 Chinese soldiers that died fighting against warlords in the Northern Expedition of 1926 and 1927. Many of the soldiers were enshrined in the nearby Linggu Temple, an ancient Buddhist temple. The Pagoda is inscribed with speeches given by Chiang and Sun Yat-Sen, (1934).
