Peridotite Dike in Shale, Tompkins County

View of a dike of peridotite intruding into Geneseo Shale (Genesee Group). The shale dates from the Devonian Period, and is located in a quarry at Portland Point on Cayuga Lake in Lansing, Tompkins County. (Dike: a body of igneous rock that cuts across layers of sedimentary rock. Peridotite: a greenish coarse-grained igneous rock consisting mostly of the mineral olivine. Devonian Period: the span of the Earth's history from about 408 to 360 million years ago.)
