Aerial photograph, no. 1 in a sequence, taken by plane flying across Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island about a week after the September 11 terrorist attack upon the World Trade Center, on September 19, 2001. On September 11, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani ordered that debris removed from the World Trade Center site be transported to the recently closed landfill at Fresh Kills.

In this image, the landfill's South Mound is visible at lower right. Part of the West Mound, on which World Trade Center debris was sorted, is visible at top left. Richmond Creek, the southern branch of the Fresh Kills stream, is visible at the right.
