Civil War. Photograph and Ordinance Invoice for Arms for the 134th NY Volunteers

As the 134th NY Volunteers prepared to leave for active campaigning in the Fall of 1862, the state's commissary general, Benjamin Welch, Jr., issued the regiments its arms. This invoice reveals that instead of receiving model 1861 Springfield rifle-muskets, the standard Civil War infantry arm, the regiment was issued 50 altered muskets, 825.69 caliber "Vincennes Rifles," and 15,000 rounds of "Exp'dg Ball Cartridges," of the same caliber. Although not as effective from long distances, this ammunition could prove extremely lethal at close ranges, a common result during Civil War battles.
