England - Siege of a Medieval Town

Siege of a Medieval Town in the 14th Century, from a plate in Ad Lehmanns' series, Kulturgeschichtliche Bilder fur den Schulunterricht (Cultural and Historical Pictures for Teaching) at Columbia University, New York. A siege tower, a battering ram, and a trebuchet are all visible outside of the town wall. The town is defended by a moat and archers with longbows on top of the town walls. Siege towers allowed invading armies to climb over a town’s thick protective walls. Battering rams were used to break down doors and were usually covered by a roof to protect soldiers from arrows and other attacks. Trebuchets were large wooden arms attached to heavy counterweights that could be used to lob projectiles over walls. Longbows were quick and had long range, but required a great deal of strength to use and control, (1911).
