Sampans crowded in a small canal, Canton, China

View of a long canal, bordered by wooden multi-story buildings, many with advertising signs in Chinese. The canal is crowded with long flat-bottomed wooden boats (sampans) propelled by long poles. The boats have wooden shelters or cabins, their decks contain poles, rope, pots, baskets, wooden boxes, tools and other items for living and working. The boats provide transportation, work, and dwellings for people living and working on the river. Canton is a port city on the Pearl River in the southern part of China.
