Rochester Hearings – April 14, 1972 (Afternoon). Recording continues Liman’s examination of Bottone. Topics discussed include staffing shortages and officer-inmate relations. Commissioners Rothschild, Wilbanks, Broderick, and Wadsworth continue to question Bottone. Bottone makes a final statement. Mitchell Krause summarizes Bottone’s testimony and introduces Donald Head, a correction officer who overseas coal gangs. Robert McKay swears in Donald Head. Arthur Liman examines Donald Head on his relationship with inmates, the work culture of coal gangs, and inmate pay scales. Commissioners Wilbanks, Rothschild, and Broderick ask questions about correctional officer culture and inmate rehabilitation. Mitchell Krause gives a synopsis of the testimony. Judge Willis examines Alton Germaine who is a civilian employee at Attica. Germaine discusses his experiences as a teacher, the educational program at Attica, and improvements that could be made to the educational program.
