New York City Hearings – April 27, 1972. Recording of Ishmael Machacotti, inmate at Attica, giving testimony about his experiences on September 13, 1971. Machacotti’s sister testifies regarding the expensive nature of traveling to visit family members in prison. WRVR journalist Dan Mack summarizes session. WRVR journalist Mike Hanson gives a news briefing on Attica related lawsuits. General Counsel Arthur Liman examines John Cudmore, general surgeon in Buffalo and a major in the National Guard. Liman interrupts Cudmore’s testimony for Attica inmate, Jose "G. I." Paris to begin his testimony. Commission Deputy General Counsel Robert Sackett examines Paris. Paris discusses his experiences as a Puerto Rican and Spanish speaking inmate, language accommodations, inmate demands, and reform. Follow-up questions are asked by Commission members Wadsworth and Wilbanks. Paris makes a final statement. The examination of Cudmore by Liman continues. Cudmore discusses entering Attica Prison as medical personnel after the retaking of the prison, role of the National Guard, treating inmates with medical needs, and his experience in the yard.
