Stephen A. Douglas, an Illinois politician and a rival of Abraham Lincoln. Douglas defeated Lincoln in the Illinois Senate race of 1858 after a series of famous debates, but lost the Presidential race to him two years later. From negative in collection of F. H. Meserve, New York.
