Dutch colonial council minutes, 13 May 1640

Instructions to secretary van Tienhoven to proceed to Martin Gerritsen bay, on Long island, and arrest a number of English strollers, who had intruded on lands there, purchased by the Dutch from the great sachem, Penhawits, and pulled down the arms of the states-general and carved a fool's head on the tree to which they had been nailed. [1640]
