Smyrna, Asia Minor - Busy Harbor

Busy harbor in Smyrna, Asia Minor, with extensive shipping in progress. Numerous ships and dockworkers are visible, and carts are loaded with goods. A small girl is on a balcony on the left. Smyrna was founded in 3000 BCE, and had been under the control of the Hittites, Persians, Greeks, Romans, and finally the Ottomans. Now known as Izmir, the city is Turkey’s third largest city and an important port on the Aegean Sea, (1912).
