Sunken "Sandmate", N.Y.

The SS Sandmate sunk on May 24, 1951. The ship was on her way to Newark, New Jersey from Coney Island, carrying a cargo of sand. When the boat passed Bergen Point, she hit bottom twice, sinking about a mile away from this location.

An alternate, though unverified, location for the sinking is in the Kill Van Kull between Staten Island, New York City and Bergen Point, New Jersey.
