View of a female elk (Cervus elaphus) in a forest in winter, probably in the Adirondack Mountains. Elk were exterminated in New York State by around 1850, but there were attempts to reintroduce them into the Adirondacks from 1900 to 1946. This may be one of those individuals. The date is unrecorded, but probably ca. 1900-1920. This image was created to record the game-related activities of the New York State Forest, Fish and Game Commission, Conservation Commission, or Conservation Department.
