Letter, President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Governor Herbert H. Lehman, 1942

Letter from President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Herbert H. Lehman, governor of New York, 1942. Roosevelt addressed the topic of German and Italian legal aliens living in the U.S. during World War II, noting that he had no plans to begin "collective evacuation" of those populations in a similar manner to the Japanese, but that individuals might be subject to that process.

Roosevelt specifically responded to concerns of Luigi Antonini, head of the Italian-American Labor Council, who vocally defended loyal Italian immigrants. Antonini's efforts later ensured greater freedoms for Italian national living in the United States.
