Aerial photograph, no. 2 in a sequence, taken by plane flying across Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island about a week after the September 11 terrorist attack upon the World Trade Center, on September 19, 2001. On September 11, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani ordered that debris removed from the World Trade Center site be transported to the recently closed landfill at Fresh Kills.

In this image, the landfill's West Mound, on which World Trade Center debris was processed, is visible at top center. Magnify this section of the image to see vehicles, tents, and existing structures that were put into use immediately after the landfill reopened.
