Aerial photograph, no. 5 in a sequence, taken by plane flying across lower Manhattan southeast along west side of lower Manhattan more than one month after the September 11 terrorist attack upon the World Trade Center, on October 21, 2001. By this point, most of the fires had been put out, and debris removal had begun.
As of mid-October, emergency personnel had extinguished all of the large fires at the site. However, small fires continued to burn until early 2002. A substantial amount of the debris, including that which had covered the section of the West Street immediately to the west of the site, had been transported to Fresh Kills.
