Participants of New York City May Day Parade

May Day parade in New York City. Pictured are protesters of the Rapp-Coudert Committee, which aimed to remove Communist "subversion" in the public schools and municipal colleges of NYC. As a result of this committee, several teachers and other school faculty members were terminated for their association (or perceived association) with the Communist Party.

In this photo are a number of female protesters, with one holding a sign that reads: "A Free America Needs Free Teachers; Don't Coudertize, Don't Hitlerize the Schools"
