Participants of May Day Parade in New York City

The photograph was used for investigative purposes by the Rapp-Coudert Committee, which aimed to remove Communist "subversion" in the public schools and municipal colleges of NYC. As a result of this committee, several teachers and other school faculty members were terminated for their association (or perceived association) with the Communist Party.

In this photograph, a group of marchers are gathered at the corner of 8th Ave. and W. 20th St. in New York City. Three men are carrying a banner, reading "Stop Political Witch Hunts." Behind them are a number of men and women wearing masks. Many participants chose to conceal their faces, perhaps so they could not be identified as communists by the police for having taken part in the parade.
