Class Action Suit by Students and Professors Over Funding Disparity

Minority students and professors submitted a class action suit February 24, 1992, against the State of New York, claiming that City of New York (CUNY) graduate programs were underfunded in comparison to State of New York (SUNY) programs. CUNY traditionally serves a greater number of Latino and African American students than SUNY, and the lawsuit was initiated in the belief that CUNY's lower funding level caused a deleterious effect on the admission and retention of Latino and African American students in doctoral programs.
