England - Tournament in the 13th Century

A Tournament in the 13th Century, from a plate in Ad Lehmann's series Kulturgeschhichtliche Bilder fur den Schulunterricht (Cultural and Historical Pictures for Teaching) at Columbia University, New York. Numerous knights are jousting with lances on horseback, with spectators in stands. Noblemen or royal figures watch from a raised platform. Banners, flags, and decorations are omnipresent. A large castle can be seen in the background through a forest. Jousting, in which two knights charged each other with blunted lances, was a popular sport, and was most often a competition rather than a fight to the death, (1911).
