Section of 40,000 examination halls, Nanking, China

View across several fields on the edge of a city, containing rows of concrete examination halls, enough to accommodate 40,000 test takers. They are part of imperial civil examination halls used during the Míng and Qing dynasties. The halls house stark cells, with bare concrete floors, and two boards stretched across the cells as a seat and a table. Also in view are two observation towers within the walled-in complex and the city lying outside it.
