Entrance to Herkimer Home, Little Falls, N.Y.

This is the entrance to the Herkimer Home. The most famous member of the Herkimer family was Nicholas Herkimer, a Revolutionary War General who was able to hold off British forces after being ambushed at the battle of Oriskany but died from wounds received. The Herkimer Home was built by Nicholas in 1764 and stayed in the family until 1814, only passing to the state in 1913. The plaque visible here was installed by the Daughters of the American Revolution to commemorate the Battle of Oriskany. The plaque reads, "General Nicholas Herkimer home and monument." This image was created to record the historic site activities of the New York State Conservation Department.
