Abandoned farmland between Almond and Angelica, N.Y.

This is an example of the abandoned farmland to be found in western New York. During this period, the Forest Service would purchase these unused lands from their owners and employ the Civilian Conservation Corps to reforest the area with fast growing trees. This area, between the cities of Almond and Angelica in Allegany County, was serviced by CCC Camp S-92 out of Almond, which operated between 1935-1942. This image was created to record the reforestation work of the Civilian Conservation Corps under the supervision of the New York State Conservation Department. This photograph may have been taken on May 21, 1936 or on June 21, 1936.
