The Governor delivered the opening remarks for the games, stating, "We New Yorkers are honored to host these games and to contribute to their success."

The Governor also gave a challenge to the athletes: "To the athletes gathered here I offer the challenge of our State motto: 'Excelsior'- ever higher. May all the records fall before your skill and prowess. May you perform to the full measure of your talents and achieve the recognition and reward your years of discipline and training deserve."

The 1980 Winter Olympics took place from February 13-February 24, in Lake Placid, New York.
