Governor Hugh L. Carey waves at the airplane that is carrying recently released American hostages from Iran, as it arrives at Stewart Air Force Base, in Newburgh, New York.

52 hostages were held in the U.S. Embassy in Iran for 444 days from November 4, 1979 until January 20, 1981, in what was referred to as the Iran Hostage Crisis.
